Google algorithm updates
Every ranking update Google has announced on its Search Status Dashboard: when it started, when it finished and how long the rollout took. We check the dashboard every hour.
What are core and spam updates?
Core updates
A few times a year Google makes broad changes to its core ranking systems. They don't target specific sites or pages: they reassess how relevant and useful content is overall, so rankings can move in both directions. A rollout takes up to about 14 days.
Spam updates
Spam updates improve the systems that detect pages breaking Google's spam policies, such as link spam, scaled content abuse or site reputation abuse. Sites that follow the policies usually see no change, while affected pages can drop or disappear from the results.
Google also announces smaller ranking updates, for example helpful content, reviews or Discover updates. They are listed here too, each with its type.

Frequently asked questions
How often does Google release core updates?
Usually a few times a year, often three or four. Google announces each one on its Search Status Dashboard when the rollout starts and marks it complete when it ends. Smaller updates, such as spam updates, come more often.
How long does a Google update take to roll out?
Google says a rollout can take up to about 14 days. Spam updates are often shorter, and some core updates have taken a little longer. Rankings can fluctuate during the whole rollout.
My rankings dropped during an update. What should I do?
Wait until the rollout is complete before changing anything, then compare your rankings and traffic before and after the update. Google recommends improving the overall quality and usefulness of your content rather than making quick technical fixes.
Where does this data come from?
From Google's official Search Status Dashboard. We check it every hour and list each ranking update with its dates and status; every entry links to Google's own announcement.
How can I get notified about Google updates?
With a serp.ac account you get a message by email or Telegram (and Slack or Discord if you connect them) when a ranking update starts and when it's complete. Update periods are also shaded on your rank charts.
We tell you when a Google ranking update starts and when it's complete, and mark it on your rank charts so you can see what it did to your keywords.
